Configure Macro Adaptive in a training path

Macro Adaptive adapts a training path to each learner's level. A placement test, at the start of the training path or at the start of each sub-section, automatically completes the content the learner already masters: they only follow what they need.

Macro Adaptive is an option: it must be enabled on your account. It is only available with the “Odyssey” training path model: with another model, the “SET UP” step disappears from the training path menu.

How it works

  • You give each piece of content in the training path a status: “Mandatory”, “Adaptive” or “Optional”.
  • For each “Adaptive” piece of content, you choose questions and a passing score.
  • The learner takes the placement test. If they reach the passing score, the corresponding “Adaptive” content is completed automatically. Otherwise, they follow it as usual.

Open the setup page

  1. Open the training path.
  2. In the left menu, click “2. SET UP” (the Macro Adaptive experience).
  3. The “Set up the Macro Adaptive experience” page opens. Choose the “Adaptive Learning Level” (see below).

A single test at the start of the training path

Option “Create a single placement test at the begining of the learning path”: you give a status to each sub-section, and a single test, the “Initial placement test”, is offered when the learner arrives in the training path. The questions of each “Adaptive” sub-section decide whether it is completed automatically.

Option “Create a placement test at the begining of one sub-section or more”: you give a status to each step, and a “Middle placement test” is offered when the learner opens each sub-section that contains “Adaptive” steps. Choose the sub-section in the list on the left to see its steps.

Set the status of each piece of content

On each sub-section (or each step), click one of the three buttons:

  • “Mandatory” (default): all learners must follow it;
  • “Adaptive”: the content is completed automatically if the learner answers the corresponding test questions correctly;
  • “Optional”: the content remains available but does not count in the progress. In our tests, an optional step was removed from the learner's counter (0 / 12 instead of 13) and from the “Estimated time remaining”, and its tile shows “OPTIONAL”.

At the top of the page, counters summarise your setup: “Average estimated time” and the number of adaptive, mandatory and optional items.

Add the test questions

Under each “Adaptive” piece of content:

  • set the “PASSING SCORE” (70% by default) with the slider;
  • click “Import questions”: the “Search and select questions” panel lists the questions of the courses and assessments in this content. Tick them, then click “IMPORT”;
  • or click “Add a question” to create one directly (see Create and configure a knowledge question in a course).

Set up the test

Click “SET UP”, on the right of the placement test. The “ASSESSMENT SETTINGS” window offers:

  • “Question types”: “Multiple choice”, “Swipe Cards”, “Open-ended question” (all ticked by default). Each question is asked in one of the ticked formats;
  • “Question order”: “Linear mode” (the order of the plan is followed, default), “Random sub-sections” or “All random”;
  • “Time limit per question”: the number of seconds per question (40 by default).

Click “CONFIRM”.

What the learner sees

With a single test, when the learner arrives in the training path, they see the “Placement test” block, with two buttons: “START” to take the test, or “IGNORE AND DO EVERYTHING” to follow the whole training path without a test. With a test per sub-section, the same block, called “Intermediate test”, appears when the sub-section is opened.

At the end of the test:

  • if they reach the passing score, the learner sees “Well done!” and the number of “Step(s) already validated following the placement test”. These steps are ticked in the course plan;
  • otherwise, they see “Go!”: no step is completed automatically, and they follow the content as usual.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the test at the start of the training path and the test at the start of sub-sections?

The test at the start of the training path decides sub-section by sub-section, all at once. The test at the start of sub-sections decides step by step, when the learner opens each sub-section.

What happens if the learner fails the test?

Nothing is completed automatically: they follow the “Adaptive” content as mandatory content.

Can the learner skip the test?

Yes, with “IGNORE AND DO EVERYTHING”. They then follow the whole training path.

Can I make a section optional, for example for information content?

Yes, with the “Optional” status. The content remains available but does not count in the progress or in the estimated time. This status is part of the Macro Adaptive option.

How do I make a whole sub-section optional?

It depends on the Adaptive Learning level you chose:

  • with “Create a single placement test at the begining of the learning path”: click “Optional” directly on the sub-section. The optional sub-section counter at the top of the page goes up, and the learner sees “OPTIONAL” on the sub-section tile;
  • with “Create a placement test at the begining of one sub-section or more”: the status is set step by step. Select the sub-section in the list on the left, then click “Optional” for each of its steps.

Can a training path be completed without its optional content?

Yes. Optional content does not count in the progress: as soon as the learner has completed all the mandatory content, the training path is completed and, if enabled, the training path certificate is available. Example: with a mandatory chapter 1 and an optional chapter 2, the learner sees “0 / 1” at the start, then “1 / 1” and the “Training certificate” button as soon as chapter 1 is finished.
