Understand Adaptive Learning

Adaptive Learning personalizes each learner's experience based on their answers. It works at two levels: in a course (micro-adaptive) and in a training path (macro-adaptive).

Enable Adaptive Learning

1. Open the course.
2. Click on the gear icon .
3. Turn on « Enable adaptive learning algorithms ».
4. Click « Confirm ».

Adaptive Learning acts on the course's knowledge questions, which are asked as games (see the 7 games and their conditions).

What Adaptive Learning does in a course

• It chooses which questions are asked right after a content. When a content has several questions, only some of them are asked at that point, depending on the learner's answers. For example, a learner who correctly answers the first two questions of a content that has three may not see the third one.
• It adapts the number of answer choices. If the learner is struggling, for example after several mistakes, fewer options may be displayed.
• It chooses the game among the games selected and available on the question, according to the learner's level. Question difficulty is calibrated on previous learners' answers: questions often answered correctly are offered first to beginners, the most often missed ones to advanced learners.
• It triggers a reinforcement phase at the end of each part of the course. It brings back the questions not asked yet and the ones the learner got wrong. A failed question comes back as another game, provided at least two games are selected and available on it. It may come back several times, but the learner can complete the course even without getting it right.
• It enables key questions. The « Key question: hyper memorization » option only exists with Adaptive Learning: a key question comes back until the learner answers it correctly. See Hyper-memorization in a knowledge question.

Without Adaptive Learning, all questions are asked right after their content, with all answer choices, and there is no reinforcement phase and no key question.

Adaptive Learning at the training path level: macro-adaptive

Macro-adaptive learning allows you to offer a tailored path for each learner through a self-assessment test at the beginning of the training path or each section. Based on their responses to the questions, learners can validate certain steps without needing to complete them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I disable Adaptive Learning in a course?
All questions are asked right after their content, with all answer choices. There is no reinforcement phase anymore. The « Key question » option disappears from questions, and key questions already set no longer apply: they are asked only once, like the others.

Does Adaptive Learning apply to assessments?
No. In an assessment, each question is asked once, with no reinforcement phase.

When does the reinforcement phase occur?
At the end of each part of the course, only if Adaptive Learning is enabled.

Why doesn't a failed question come back during reinforcement?
It probably has only one game selected or available. A failed question comes back as another game: with a single game, it can't come back. Select at least two games and check that they don't show « insufficient data to be generated ».

Can I force all questions to appear for each learner?
A content with a single question always asks it. For a content with several questions, turn on « Ask this question immediately after the associated learning content » in the advanced options of each question concerned: see Set the more options. You can also turn Adaptive Learning off.

How is question difficulty assessed?
Based on the overall success rate: questions often answered correctly are considered easy, those often missed are considered more difficult.
