Understand time accounting for a course or assessment
When a participant begins a course or assessment on Teach Up, the timer starts automatically. However, if the participant remains inactive (no mouse movement, for example) for more than five minutes, a pop-up window will appear to check if they are still present. During this time, the timer is paused. The participant must click "Continue" to resume the time counting.
Key points:
- The timer starts as soon as the participant begins an activity.
- Inactivity of more than 5 minutes triggers an automatic pause with a notification asking for confirmation.
Interpret data on the course or assessment dashboard
On the course or assessment dashboard, you can accurately track the time spent by each participant. You can configure the dashboard to display:
- Best attempt: The attempt where the participant achieved the highest score.
- Last attempt: The most recent attempt made by the participant.
Available information:
- Total time spent: Cumulates the durations of all the participant's attempts.
- Best or last attempt: You can choose to display either the time of the best attempt or the time of the last attempt made by the participant.
Understand time accounting for a training path
For training paths, Teach Up accounts for the total time spent on each activity, whether they are Teach Up courses or integrated SCORM packages. The time of the last attempt is displayed on the administrator dashboard. This calculation includes:
- Time spent in Teach Up courses
- Time spent in SCORM packages
- Time spent on placement tests
Additionally, the accounting includes the estimated durations set by the course designer for certain steps such as:
- Video duration
- In-person sessions
- Time spent on external resources (documents, links, etc.)
Not counted:
- Time spent in the training path menus
- Inactivity time: After five minutes of inactivity, a pop-up appears, and the timer is paused until the participant responds.
Manage the impact of SCORM broadcasting
When a Teach Up course is broadcast via an LMS (Learning Management System) using SCORM, the time spent by the participant may be interpreted differently depending on the LMS used. Here are the two possible options:
- The LMS reflects the time spent provided by Teach Up.
- The LMS uses its own time accounting system, which can lead to discrepancies with Teach Up's data.
Factors explaining these discrepancies:
- Some LMSs account for inactivity time, whereas Teach Up pauses the timer during inactivity.
- In the context of a training path, some LMSs may not account for specific steps, such as in-person sessions or the consultation of external resources.
It is essential to verify these settings with your LMS to ensure maximum consistency in time reports.
View time on the participant dashboard
This feature is only available to Platform subscription holders. From the “Participants” tab, you can view all the training completed by a participant as well as the total time spent. This time is calculated by adding the durations of the last attempts for each activity.
Starting from March 1, 2024, some information displayed on the participant dashboard may differ. In case of doubt, Excel exports will prevail and provide the exact data. We are currently working to resolve these discrepancies.
Calculate time from the participant's portal
In their personal portal, participants can view the time spent on each training. This time corresponds to the duration of the last attempt, not the cumulative time if the training was completed multiple times.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why is the total time displayed on my LMS different from Teach Up's time?
Some LMSs account for inactivity time or have their own timing system, which can create discrepancies with the data provided by Teach Up.
What happens if a participant is inactive for more than 5 minutes?
After 5 minutes of inactivity, a pop-up window appears to check if the participant is still active. During this time, the timer is paused.
How is the time for a training path calculated?
The time is calculated based on the participant’s last attempt and includes time spent on courses, SCORM packages, as well as estimated durations for steps such as videos or in-person sessions.
