Testing guide: importing a SCORM package into your LMS

This article guides you through testing a SCORM export from Teach Up and then importing that SCORM package into your LMS.

Carried out from start to finish, this test lets you distribute your training with complete peace of mind and anticipate any changes needed to ensure the best possible data reporting. Make sure you complete each step and also check learner data from your LMS.

To support this test, your Teach Up team has provided a dedicated training path in your space: "Moins de 6 minutes pour assurer une diffusion SCORM en toute sérénité". You can also use your own training currently in development to run the test.

Let's go: 6 test steps!

Table of contents

Step 1: check the prerequisites

Before you start testing the import of SCORM packages exported from Teach Up into your LMS, make sure that you:

  • know the specifics of your LMS, in particular the SCORM export version.
  • have a Teach Up account.
  • have clearly identified your learner data reporting needs (progress, completion, success, score...).
  • are familiar with SCORM concepts, which will make your test easier. If you need more details, you can read this dedicated article.

Step 2: access your Teach Up account and the test training path

To access your Teach Up account:

  • log in with your credentials.
  • find and open the test training path "Moins de 6 minutes pour assurer une diffusion SCORM en toute sérénité".

This test training path contains:

  • a course
  • an assessment
  • a video
  • an in-person session

This training path is a skeleton used to simulate the completion of a real training. It is not meant to provide content but to serve as a framework. You are free to edit this framework so that it matches your future training as closely as possible: you can add or remove steps if needed. By completing this framework on your LMS, you will be able to test every scenario and make sure that your learners' data is reported as you expect.

Step 3: configure and download the SCORM package in Teach Up

To configure and download the SCORM package, follow the steps detailed in this article.

We also offer this short questionnaire to help you with the configuration.

Step 4: import the SCORM package into your LMS

Follow the instructions provided by your LMS to import the SCORM package into your platform.

Step 5: play the training path to generate learner data

Play the training path from the LMS from start to finish, putting yourself in the learner's shoes.

We recommend testing several configurations:

  • play the training on a computer.
  • play the training on a mobile phone.
  • play the training with a score below the required pass mark.
  • play the training with a score above the required pass mark.
  • play the training without completing it.
  • play the training through to the end.

These different scenarios will let you validate data reporting in real-life conditions for learners.

Step 6: analyse and validate the reported data

From your LMS, analyse the completion data for your training path. If you have the Dashboard feature in Teach Up, check that the data in your LMS is consistent with the data in Teach Up.

We recommend paying particular attention to the following data:

  • time spent.
  • your learners' first and last names, and their email if your LMS allows it.
  • success, progress or score, depending on how your SCORM package is configured.

If the data does not meet your expectations after the test, we recommend checking your SCORM package configuration.

Common issues

The time counted in my LMS differs from the time spent shown in Teach Up

LMSs have two ways of displaying the time your learners spend on a training built with Teach Up.

  • either the LMS reflects the time spent provided by Teach Up.
  • or the LMS has its own system for counting the time spent by the learner. In this case, there may be differences between Teach Up and the LMS. These differences can be due to several factors:
    • Teach Up does not count the time during which the user is inactive on the training. Some LMSs may count this time.
    • for a training path: the LMS not counting the time spent on certain steps of the training path, such as the duration of in-person sessions and the time spent viewing external resources.
    • other minor factors, to be checked with your LMS.

To find out more about how Teach Up counts the time spent by learners, read this article.

No data is reported in my LMS, or the data is incomplete

  1. Start by checking your SCORM package configuration, in particular whether the "Score transmitted to the LMS platform" option is enabled.
  2. Use the keyboard shortcut "ctrl"+"i" to display the following debug window:
Debug window3.     Use the "Copy" button at the bottom of this window and share the content with Teach Up support at support@teachup.com, explaining the problem you encountered.

The learner is stuck

Check that access to the training path steps is not conditional on reaching a score or on a date.

If your problem is not solved, feel free to contact our teams, specifying the type of issue and sending us the content of the debug window displayed with the keyboard shortcut "ctrl"+"i".

An error message says there is an error in the generated package

This error is related to reading an image. The SCORM package can be read and used, but one of your images will not be displayed. We invite you to test in your LMS to find the image in question, then contact support so that we can help you.
